I admit that I've been waiting to write about Lady Gaga since when I started this blog. Finally, the chance has come with Goddess of Love's latest video "G.U.Y." (abbreviation of "Girl Under You").
"G.U.Y." is served as the third single from ARTPOP. Even though ARTPOP failed to achieve the previous commercial success of Born This Way and the second single "Do What U Want" missed a great opportunity to be a big hit worldwide due to its Terry Richardson-directed music video was shelved, "G.U.Y." still had a big budget to bring Gaga back to the top.
The Zedd-produced track has always been a fan favorite, received acclaim from music critics as a true ARTPOP standout and a potential huge hit. There was a dilemma whether to release "Gypsy" - another standout track, fan favorite and label's choice, or "Venus" - a controversial song and Gaga's personal favorite, but in the end "G.U.Y." - critics', fans' and Gaga's darling had been chosen as the third single.
"G.U.Y." music video starts with Gaga as an angel that was shot down in the middle of nowhere. There're man all around Gaga, but no one helps her because they only care about the money falling all around her. The album title track "ARTPOP" is playing in the background (I love the slightly remixed audio in Gaga removing the arrow from her chest scene).
Gaga makes it on her feet to a palace (the breath-taking Hearst Castle, California), where she collapsed at the front door. "Venus" begins as she is carried to a magical pool to heal. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills stars make a cameo - which is said to imply the music industry in which some artists that can't even play their own instruments but still get famous of their looks.
"G.U.Y." plays as Gaga rises again from the water as a Greek Goddess (is that Venus - Goddess of Love?)! I'm not gonna go into any more details because you HAVE TO watch this incredible video yourself. Just know that Mother Monster looks absolutely stunning in each and every look in the mv. And the storyline is pretty cool (even though it's pretty hard to understand just like most of her other videos), featuring famous Youtuber SkyDoesMinecraft, Lisa Vanderpump and Kyle Richards, and special cameo by Michael Jackson, Gandhi, John Lennon and Jesus (sort of).
"G.U.Y." is like the best gift Mother Monster gives to Little Monsters this year (so far). It's beyond EPIC! And it's a pretty smart marketing strategy actually.
After leaving fans hung up and disappointed over "Do What U Want", "G.U.Y." was highly hyped and expected as a come back - the true beginning of ARTPOP. And surprisingly, the mv turned out better than expected, and contained not only one but four songs from the album (hey, I forgot "MANiCURE" on the long ass credit). What a way to promote for ARTPOP! And with the streaming rules of Billboard, ALL four of them will receive streaming points and therefore chart on Billboard Hot 100 next week. Brilliant to be honest.
Now all we need to see is what Interscope plans for "G.U.Y." beside the gorgeous music video. Meanwhile, Little Monsters, don't forget to stream the video on Youtube as well as the song on other streaming platforms such as Spotify... And request the song on radio too! Buy the song on iTunes here, or gift it to your beloved ones!
